Our Environmental Approach
Our approach to environmental issues is something we take very seriously. We have taken great strides in recent years towards becoming increasingly responsible, and we are continuing our commitment to progress in all areas of our church life.
We recognise our duty to care for God’s creation, protect the most vulnerable of our sisters and brothers affected by our changing climate, and leave a thriving home for future generations.
So far highlights include:
Transforming our church grounds into a biodiverse wildlife habitat complete with wildflowers, hedgerows and trees, a pond, a bug hotel and bird feeders, and a marsh area. We encourage local community members to use the space, and daily we’re heartened to see families and groups stopping off to explore the garden. Throughout the year we hold events in the space, including planting sessions with our young people.
We have completed a Net Zero Carbon audit of our church building, and identified improvements to reduce our carbon footprint. We are working our way through these interventions, such as replacing and upgrading doors, moving monthly services into the hall during winter to avoid heating the church, and renewing lighting.
We have switched to 100% renewable energy sources and set a target to reduce our carbon emissions year on year.
We integrate creation care into our worship services throughout the year, and have a particular focus through the Season of Creation each Autumn
We are a Fairtrade Church, and regularly hold a Traidcraft stall which encourages refill and plastic-free products.
We're proud to have gained a Silver Eco Church award, and are currently working hard towards a Gold certification
We aim to:
Continue to promote a culture of environmental awareness, through our communications and activities;
Minimise waste through re-use (elimination of single use products) and recycling wherever possible; and minimise energy waste through improving energy efficiencies.
Purchase with positive ethical consideration - environmental sustainability being a key factor (for example, Fairtrade)
Ensure our investments are held ethically - environmental sustainability being a key factor.
Work with partners to encourage mutual learning and best practice in sustainability, and host events and activities to support local conservation and engagement in environmental issues
